Safety Guidelines: Wildfires and Wildfire Smoke

Our North Shore communities have been effected lately by wildfires. It's important for everyone to reduce their exposure to smokeWildfire smoke irritates your eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. It can make it hard to breathe and make you cough or wheeze. Children and people with asthmaCOPDheart diseasediabetes, chronic kidney disease, or who are pregnant need to be especially careful about breathing wildfire smoke. Click to Read Some Tips from the CDC.

Why You Should Hydrate First Thing in the Morning

For most of us, the seven to eight hours we spend sleeping “may be the longest period of a 24-hour day that we are without fluid,” says Leslie Bonci, RD, MPH, author of The Active Calorie Diet. Our bodies go into a kind of “hibernation” mode when we slumber, which slows down our metabolism, studies show, as well as slowing our digestion. But we still lose about a half a pound overnight, according to research, most of which is fluid loss from sweating, per the Sleep Foundation, and from breathing. “After an overnight fast, the body is subhydrated,” Bonci says. Click to Read More.

Save the Date: Tuesday, December 3rd: There will be a free seminar at instructor Kim Crowley's fitness studio in Marblehead. The seminar will offer some great tips for navigating the holiday season with small life changes. Click to Find Out More.

Side-to-Side Eye Movement Can Improve Stability in Parkinson’s

Side-to-side eye movements can help reduce body sway and improve postural stability in people with Parkinson’s disease, even though Parkinson’s patients generally have difficulty coordinating their eye movements, a new study reports. The study, “People with Parkinson’s Disease Are Able to Couple Eye Movements and Postural Sway to Improve Stability,” was published in Biomechanics.

People with Parkinson’s have a higher risk of falls. One of the reasons is that they tend to sway more when standing than people without the disease. This can increase the risk of them losing their balance and falling over.

It’s been proven that side-to-side and up-and-down, that is, saccadic, eye movements can help reduce body sway in adults who don’t have a neurological disease. Click to Read More.

Speaker Sarah Horn, MD, is Assistant Professor of Neurology, Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Program and Director, Movement Disorders Fellowship Program, UT Health San Antonio. Click to Register.
